The Cornell Dubilier Electronics (CDE) company sold their rotor division to Telex/Hy-Gain in 1981. Hy-Gain decided to support only the AR-22, AR-40, CD45-II, Ham-4, and Tailtwister rotors. In 1981, the rights and parts for ALL of the other CDE rotators were assigned to Norm's Rotor Service. INSTRUCTION MANUAL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The CD-45-II Rotator consists of a bell-type rotator, a metered control unit and the necessary mounting hardware. The rotator is designed to mount on a plate inside a tower or on a mast. The rotator unit must be wired to the control unit with a 7 or 8 wire cable. Model: Direction Control BT-1 - Cornell-Dubilier Electric CDE; Material: Wooden case: Shape: Tablemodel, with any shape - general. My twentymeter monobander dangling by the coaxial cable. I found thiswhen I got back from a week
at the beach. I felt fortunate that that the coax held itwhile I was away.

Below, you can see three bolts fell out, and one brokeoff. If you look closely you can see where the
potentiometer scratched away some of the molded inside of the housingthat was supposed to hold it,
after the beam was allowed to swing past south.

  1. You should never use the brake to stop the rotor if youantenna is large. The torque from an antenna with a largemoment of inertia can break the break wedge or the housing. Ihave done both. Delay circuits are available if you needthem, but I feel that I can do a better job than any timer by watchingthe indicator to see if the antenna has finished coasting to a stop.
  2. If it gets cold at your QTH, you might want to use lighteroil than comes with the rotor. In Anchorage, Alaska where Igrew up I did that after not being able to turn my antenna when it wascolder than about twenty degrees below zero Fahrenheit.
  3. The manuals for the rotor are available at the Hy-Gain web site.
  4. It is well worth your time to solder terminal lugs toconnect the wires to the rotor, and screw them on while the rotor is onthe ground. They are much more reliable than just twistingthe wires and screwing them down. It is very difficult to repair thatkind of thing at the top of your tower.
  5. The gray eight wire cable doesn't last in the ultra violetradiation and heat here in the Walla Walla, Washington area for morethan about ten years maximum. I am hoping the black stuff Ipurchased a couple of years ago has a longer life.

Cde 45 Rotor Manual

In February 2018 I purchased a second hand Tennamast 10m tilt over Adapt-A-Mast complete with rotator cage, CDE Ham II rotator and CDE rotator controller.

Although I saw the rotator working I decided to check over the internals of the rotator, give it a bit of a service, refurbish the exterior and clean up the connection points.

When I removed the rotator from the cage I noticed each of the retaining bolts were a variety of different sizes and heads, including Hex, Slot, Torx and Phillips.

When I removed removed the bolts to separate the upper and lower parts of the bell housing again I noticed different types of bolts had been used, including a self-tapping bolt. A couple of the threads were damaged too.

So as part of my refurbishment I will be using HeliCoil inserts of a common size to replace all of the existing threads so I can use the same type of fasteners.

CDE HAM II CONTROL UNIT

Considering the age of this system the control unit is in really good condition and is fully working so I don’t need to do anything with this.

INSPECTING INSIDE THE CDE HAM II ROTATOR SYSTEM

Separating the upper and lower parts of the bell housing and looking inside I can see it has been very well maintained by the previous owner(s). It was really clean with the upper and lower bearing sets well greased and seals in good condition. The only thing I need am going to do here is remove the old grease from the bearings and apply some new grease.

CONTROL CABLE CONNECTIONS

Cde Rotator Manual

On the base of the rotator are the connections for the control cable. These are exposed to the elements and were in poor condition. Luckily it appeared the previous owner greased the threads so even though the bolts are heavily rusted on the surface, the threads are in good condition and could be removed easily.
